Wayfinder - Gloom Gate Concepts

I created this target animatic for our gameplay reveal trailer. We think of Wayfinders of having access to very advanced technology that their Gloom Daggers give them access to. So we played with the idea of AR displays for this menu iteration.

Gloom material concept. I did this early concept at a time when the art team was working out various ideas about the makeup and behavior of Gloom in the game. We ultimately settled on a more pixelated look with digital distortion and tearing.

In this storyboarded concept, the Gloom Gate took the form of a freestanding door/portal. I pitched the idea that you would break the portal open with your Gloom Dagger and it would reform with you inside of it.

In this storyboarded concept, I wanted to have a seamless transition from the setup menu to the character stabbing the Gloom Gate and initiating travel. This concept also puts more storytelling into the imbuement and dagger interaction.

Wayfinder - Gloom Gate Concepts

The Gloom Gate is a key element in Wayfinder, serving as the portal for the player to enter the Gloom and travel to Lost Zones. These are areas that are procedurally generated, with influence from mutators the player applies when travelling. As a team we have gone through very many iterations of the look and behavior of the gate. These concepts capture some of the ideas I was able to contribute.
